Gas Mileage Tips - Your Tires

June 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Some of the most important gas mileage tips have to do with your tires.

Tire pressure, alignment, and balance are key to your engine’s efficiency, and important in order to get better gas mileage. They are also important safety considerations.

Check your tire pressure whenever you fill-up; under-inflated tires are harder to roll, making your engine work harder and use more gas.

A tire guage is a very worthwhile investment.

Under-inflated can reduce the fuel efficiency of your car by up to 2 percent for each pound that the tires are under-inflated. Under-inflated tires will also wear out faster, which again contributes to higher gas
consumption - not to mention having to replace your tires sooner.

Tire pressure increases as you’re driving due to the heat generated from friction. The best time to check your tire pressure is when it’s cool outside or in the morning after your car has been sitting for several hours without driving.

Improper balance will also cause a certain amount of engine drag, which will increase the amount of gas that you are using. (You’ll also increase tire wear, again causing you to have to replace your tires sooner than you should.)

Equally important gas mileage tips - pay attention to the wheel alignment on your vehicle. Poor alignment will cause additional engine drag, which will increase the amount of gas that you are using. (And again,  you’ll also increase tire wear, causing you to have to replace your tires sooner than you should.)

You can tell if your car needs an alignment if it pulls in one direction on the steering wheel when you are driving. If you are experiencing a type of pulling action it’s important that you schedule an appointment to have an alignment done.

These are gas mileage tips that can have a big aggregate impact, but even more importantly, will improve your safety a great deal.
