The following gas mileage tips can help reduce the number of trips you have to make to the gas station for fill-ups. You can also read our ‘expanded’ list of gas mileage tips, and we will be expanding it greatly in our forthcoming “Gas For Less Money” book, coming out July 1.
Keep your tires and brake aligned, and your tires properly inflated. Improperly inflated tires, mis-aligned tires and brakes can reduce your engines efficiency tremendously. This tip alone can improve your gas mileage in some cases as much as 10-15%.
Avoid “stop-and-go” traffic. If you can do your shopping during off-peak times, when there is less traffic, you can save as much as another 10% in how much fuel you use on the trip.
Avoid braking - how many of us speed up just to have to brake at a stop sign or red light? Of course you have to accerate to go, but when you are accelerating simply to get to the next stop sign a few seconds quicker, you are simply wasting gas.
Even if you don’t drive all that much, taking advantage of these and other gas mileage tips will add up. A 10% improvement in gas mileage translates into more thatn $4.00 per fill-up!

One more tip to consider if you drive a pickup… Industry studies show putting a tonneau cover on your truck bed can improve your gas mileage by up to 10%. I’ve talked to people that have seen an average of 2-5% improvement after putting a truck bed cover on their truck. You can also check out any truck forums on the web…there’s lots of mileage discussions & tips there too. It’s definitely worth looking into, because it doesn’t look like gas prices are going down anytime soon.
