Gas Mileage Improvements - Maintenance

Gas mileage improvements can be found in the way you drive, but don’t overlook your car’s maintenance!

Experts estimate that basic car maintenance and upkeep can result in gas mileage improvements of 15% on up to 30% or more?

Keeping your tires inflated to their proper psi is one of the easiest ways to improve gas mileage, yet it can have a dramatic effect. Improperly inflated tires, particularly tires that are low, are harder to turn. That in turn makes your engine work harder to turn them, burning more gas.

Check your tires every time you fill up your car. In fact, it pays to buy a tire gauge; they are inexpensive, and will pay for themselves many times over.

Check your air filter. This often-neglected maintenance tip can also have a big impact on improving gas mileage. A clogged or dirty air filter lets less oxygen into the engine, resulting in less-efficient combustion. Again, that means your engine is working harder, burning more gasoline than necessary.

Replace your air filter as soon as it shows signs of dirt, or becomes discolored.

Change your oil every 2500 to 3000 miles. Dirty oil not only damages your engine, but makes your engine run hotter because of friction. You should check your oil whenever you fill up, it doesn’t cost you anything to check.

These simple car maintenance efforts will result in significant gas mileage improvements, not to mention keeping your engine running smoother, longer!
